  • Highlands Animal Hospital is the first and oldest veterinary clinic in Highlands County. Doctor Frank Handley started the practice in the mid-1950's and the initial clinic was located in a home approximately 1/2 mile North of our present location. Doctor Handley and his family lived in the back of the home and ran the clinic out of the front. At that time, the practice was primarily large animal and most of the work was done on the farms and ranches in Highlands and surrounding counties.

The current facility was constructed in 1972. At that time Doctor Howard Jones was working as an associate. Doctor Jones returned to Auburn to pursue his PhD and to teach at the Veterinary College. In the early 1980's, Doctor Jones returned to Highlands Animal Hospital and took over ownership as Doctor Handley's health was declining and he was ready for retirement. Doctor John Young joined the practice in 1989 as an associate and assumed ownership in 2000 when Doctor Jones retired.

What began as almost exclusively a large animal practice has evolved over the years into a modern Small Animal Hospital.  Doctor Young is only the third owner in over 60 years. We strive to build long-term relationships in the community, and we plan on being here for a long time to come. Thanks for staying with us as we've grown with you.
